Can't hardly wait

For Fall!  (Okay, a little spring and summer would be nice first.)

But:

Guess who's coming to Target next?

Here's a hint.

When my friend Sara sent me this link with the news, it was with one caveat: do not have a heart attack.

Favorite designers ever.

News Flash!

I was just paging through Lucky magazine over breakfast, and I made a sound when I turned to this page that brought my older daughter running.

Kind of a sucked-in-breath sound that made her think something was wrong, instead of oh, so right. And then I had to try to explain "desire," "design collaboration," and "bargains" to a four year old.

She'll understand someday.

Shopping round up

I made the rounds to a couple of big box stores yesterday, looking for bits and piece for various projects, and found some surprises that I thought I'd pass along to you.

Target has this new blue and white ikat melamine plates, just a few dollars a piece. (If they were ceramic, I would pick up the bowls to go with our royal copenhagen blue fluted mega china, but alas.)

At Home Goods, in addition to snagging lamps in the right shade of green for the living room (more on that later), I spotted this little slipper chair with a vintage polo print. So cute for a little boys room and just $99.

But the real surprise was Pier 1 imports. I remember shopping for CLOTHES and jewelry at Pier 1 when I was a kid (I remember one dress in particular in blue, black, and white ikat--it would be so "in" again today), but their home stuff is kind of all over the map, and often seems a bit pricey for the quality. I have found good deals on occasion though, like our outdoor chairs, so I popped in on a whim yesterday, as I was in the market for some "global" throw pillows. While they didn't have quite what I was looking for, I did snag this teeny tiny geometric pillow for just $3 (one corner is missing its pom poms--adds character, right?)

And I saw many other items of interest. Another good choice for a boys room, I love this little rattan bucket seat for $129

Love this modern red X-base table, though I couldn't find the price

Was very tempted by these beaded-edges cloth napkins in great colors for less than $5 a piece (but worried that the bead trim was not the best for daily use, and we use cloth napkins every day)

Caught sight of this chain-mail pillow on my way out the door

Love this outdoor lantern for inside--kind of reminds me of those franco albini rattan ottomans that I do so love

But my absolute favorite is this outdoor throne.

It reminds me of these 60s outdoor sets (of course not as cool, but much more accessible), which I covet intensely.

[House Beautiful]

I also picked up to excellent little surprises for Oliver's room, but I think I'll hold onto those until we reveal the "after."

Have you had any good find lately? Let me know!

Deal: Mongolian Lambswool Pillow

Today on One Kings Lane, the Mongolian Lambswool Pillows are on special for $59 (retail $150), but they're all already on hold.

You could get the same thing at West Elm, where the 16" square is always $59 (above), or you could do what I did: snap one up at Target for just $12.99 for an 18" square. There it is, on the new loveseat:

That's right, $12.99. It's not actual lambswool, but hey, isn't that maybe a good thing?

You should definitely sign up for One Kings Lane if you haven't already (and if you're in the market for all kinds of home goodies at substantial discounts.) Here, I'll invite you.

You're welcome.

Simple Storage Solution

When I re-did the girls' room, there were storage implications. Bringing in a dresser displaced the tiered toy bin, but it also freed up some plastic drawers in the closet. (In Boulder, there was no room for a dresser, so we got these green plastic drawers from Target to hide in the closet.)

Because the girls mostly play with toys made up of smaller pieces when they are in their room, the little drawers were just the right size for some carefully chosen toys. Only problem: while the drawers are plastic, they aren't totally clear, and the girls are used to having their toys where they can see them.

So I took pictures of the items that belong in each drawer, laid out on a white surface. I printed them on my home computer and taped then to the drawers.

Because Clio is learning to read, I also made labels for each drawer. I wrote them in cursive because in Montessori, kids learn their cursive letters first. I just taped those right on, too.

I thought about creating little frames on the computer, or at the very least "designing" the labels, with borders and a cute font, but in the end I decided not to over think it, and to go with something functional and educational for the girls, rather than something all design-y for me. It is all inside a closet, after all, and, perhaps this is sacrilege, but I do think the world has gone a bit overboard in insisting that every last item be adorable, stylish, or both.

What I DID do was make sure the bins were all coordinated, and mixed it up with the green-and-white woven ones on the top of the drawers. Luckily, they also coordinate with the dominant color in the rooms' overall design: green.

And you know what? The system works like a charm. The girls are able to put their toys away where they belong and, miracle of miracles, they actually do.

Hello!

Just saw this ad for a new line of bedding from Teen Vogue for JCPenney. Funny: the heart and stripes throw pillow is just what I was looking for in an early iteration of my plans for the girls room, inspired by this shirt of Clio's.

(By the way, remember that Domino feature, Can This Outfit Be Turned into a Room? I am so tempted to design a room inspired by Nadia's hippy-chic ensemble.)

While taken all together, the three Teen Vogue collections do indeed read too teen for a grown up room, but there are some great elements at good prices, like this yellow ruffled pillow,

the pink and orange striped sheet set of the Flower Girl collection

or the almost block printed sheet set of the Malibu Surfer collection, with that fun little turquoise trim.

I'm thinking of picking up a pair of the hot-pink edged bedskirts, looking ahead to when the girls' beds get raised off the floor.

If the color is a fairly close match to their headboards, this would make for a very finished look.

It's so interesting to see all the design collaborations coming down the pike, inspired by Target. By the way, Target is having a special promotion in March, bringing back the best dresses of the past 5 years' worth of designer collaborations.

Happy Shopping!

Happy Accidents

I've been slowly but surely thinking my way through design for the girls' room, and in the process I ordered a great looking and super inexpensive cotton pile rug from Overstock.com. I was inspired by this photo from Domino (We inherited a similar shade of blue on the walls and I already have raspberry microsuede for headboards and love the total effect)

as well as an outfit that Clio loves to wear which includes a white top with black stripes and a red sequined heart and a tiny floral print skirt (which in my mind translates to Liberty of London for Target bedding or accessories, though of course I missed my moment on that and would have to shell out for it on ebay one piece at a time. I never do things the easy way, do I?)

So I was really excited to find a 5x7 black and white bold striped rug for only $100.

Now, I was initially skeptical about ordering rugs online. You can't feel the pile, you can't really see the color, and the pattern could show up much more (or less) pronounced than it looks in photos. But I ordered one for the basement with great success, and found that I was hooked. There is just so much VARIETY on overstock, the prices are uniformly reasonable, shipping is fast and practically free, and you can search by size, color, pattern, style, material, and price point, which is really tremendous.

Well, fast forward to last week when my black and white striped rug arrived, only.... it was BROWN and IVORY. Damn internet. Seriously, under no circumstances could this rug be considered in the black family, and the color scheme just sort of felt muddy and, well, wrong in the girls room.

But guess what? Inspiration struck and I tried the rug in our bedroom, where I must say, it looks fabulous.

Don't you think? I have been using an old sheepskin rug in there, which I was kind of digging, but my grandmother's white upholstered boudoir chairs will migrate back into the bedroom when the living room loveseat arrives, and that will all be a bit monochromatic for me. The fun thing is that I NEVER would have thought to buy this rug for this room. So much brown. So much strong, graphic pattern. Just proves once again that more is more.
